Size: Weight Range : Male: lbs. April Saddest date in my life. Women come and go; fortunes made and lost but good dogs can never be replaced…. Bingo Marco! There are 5 things a man needs in life…they are: A good pair of boots, a good rifle, a good wood burning stove, a good guitar, and a great dog….
Lucy man! The Bible says that it is easier for a camel to go thru the eye of a needle, than it is for a rich man to go to Heaven. I had two Labrador Retrievers who would on their own, get up on the couch with me and go to sleep on my chest. I had all the love in the world…except for all of the love that all of the Labs that you people post on here had of your own. The Labrador retriever, the peace ambassador or the universe.
Will then said, well where do dogs go, because I want to go where dogs go. I have a Field lab, black, 5 years old. Her name is Annie. She is a bundle of energy and will fetch and run all day long.
I work at home and we play with her and our 10 year old yellow lab, who seems to be a mix of Field and Show labs, every day. Annie did take until about age to settle into a fantastic dog. She is super intelligent, as is our other lab, and an absolute joy to have around. She is playful and snuggly and loving. My daugher has a Show lab, black, 5 years old. Her name is Chloe. They also have a rescue mix.
Chloe is very low-key, which is great as my daughter and her husband work. They got the rescue for a playmate, but have seen on video that they just sleep all day.
The Field lab is perfect for me — I love to play and love the high energy of Annie. The Show lab is perfect for my daughter — she loves to chill out with Chloe and lay around on the couch.
Either type is perfect for someone; it depends on what you are looking for. The only caveat I would say is that Chloe has allergies, as did our previous show lab, and this has caused much trouble and expense. Labs are wonderful! So smart, so loving, so easy to train and enjoy life with. Dogs in general are so life-changing! Love dogs! Purchased from a reputable breeder in S.
She is the most gentle, loving, beautiful, stubborn, difficult-to-train dog ever! She is my second lab. She also has terrible allergies so only grain-free high-quality food. Two years later, she tore her other one. Too much arthritis to be able to do surgery. It has way slowed her down but is still loving and adorable. Adored her as well, lots of youthful energy, but eventually had such bad hip dysplasia we had to put her to sleep at When you commit to a lab, you have to take the good with the bad.
They need lots of exercise and attention. They are notoriously naughty dogs if you leave them alone too long. And all about the food so can quickly get too heavy. I look back and would definitely recommend raising your kids with a lab.
Just be ready to do lots of exercise with them! I had him tested again with the same results. A makeup of breeds that have speed, intelligence and tenacity. I believe there is some misinformation in this article that needs to be addressed. The reason it is incorrect is there really are three different types of Labradors. American, British, and English. Firstly I want to say the information on why show labs and working labs look different is spot on.
It is explained very nicely. The contrast between American Labs and English labs I think is accurate however we cannot lump American Labs and British working field trial dogs together. To keep this short I will focus on British field trial dogs compared to American but test titled dogs.
The two are bred with a completely different mindset. American lines are bred to be big, strong , high energy dogs. The training techniques work all of the bad traits out of the dog. The use of shock collars and force fetching are examples of how it is accomplished. So here is where British working lines are vastly different in temperament.
Here is the takeaway. American Labs. The bad traits are trained out of them. So those traits vet bred down to the next generation. British dogs dogs bred and worked in the UK — The bad habits are bred out of the dog. Temperament — here is where the information gets twisted in this article. British labs are foremost bred for temperament. They are quiet, biddable, steady, intelligent, and they are Born to have an off switch when they are not working.
English show labs firstly are bred to be beautiful. And beautiful they are! Their puppy stage is much longer they have more unfocused energy than their British counterparts. They are harder to train and generally will be more hyper in the house as a young dog. As adults they are both calm. The American Labrador on the other hand, will still be bouncing off that walks! Lets just talk about field Labradors. If you use that as a basis, your article does not stand up.
I have enjoyed both the article and the subsequent years of comments. I love hearing the love of these amazing animals. Now, a little over 3 years later, we are down to one hike me and miles of cross-country romps her but with some time at least on-leash.
She is a precious dog, and recently, when I was very sick, she hardly left my bedside. I was looking at her puppy pictures the other day, and had to remind myself quite sternly about the downsides of the puppy years…like the time she grabbed a paperback book, ran under the grand piano leaving my husband and me to crawl in after her in a double-team effort to retrieve the book.
I have always enjoyed our dogs, but have never been in love with one before. I love this story. Thank you for sharing.
Linus was my heart dog. We unfortunately lost him a couple years ago. I think you are taking a very simplistic view. The difference is simply between show and working types and they should be referred to as such. In the UK you will find many middle of the road types. They are great family pets and a good work dog for the average handler who would find the really hot trials bred dogs to much of a handful. I no longer have labradors myself but still love the breed whichever type.
I have a black lab. He is 7 yrs now. I received him as a Puppy, does not have papers. Anyone else experience the same problem. Both have come from reputable breeders who breed these specific lines. He also loves to eat and I have always struggled to keep his weight reasonable. Daisy, on the other hand, comes from a long line of champion field retrievers. Her great-grandfather is in the retrieving Hall of Fame, and her grandfather is probably going to end up there as well.
Loves to run, loves to run, and lives to retrieve. I love them both but they are like Yin and Yang. The idea that they are the same breed is pretty amusing to me. They both are goofballs who love people and kind of look the same, but the resemblances stop there. Save my name, email, and website in this browser for the next time I comment. Brown May 4, at pm We have plenty of both show and working labs in the UK and generally differentiate between them using those two terms. He was the first chocolate labrador to run in the Championship. He narrowly failed. The problem was getting sufficient runs in open trials to gain the second victory that would have given Coke the coveted title; he did manage a second, several thirds and certificates of merits but not that elusive first place.
They performed magnificently. A bitch, Zeta, performed a remarkable retrieve of a hen pheasant totally submerged in a stream. I was impressed. Few judges have had the chance to assess a chocolate. But the popularity of yellows continues to grow, and the , and winners of the Championship were of this colour. You can still meet handlers who claim that yellow labradors are less trainable than blacks and others who believe that yellow dogs have more brains than blacks. Both theories are, of course, nonsense, as a study of labrador genetics proves.
The colour of the coat of a labrador puppy is determined by the genetic make-up inherited from its parents. Though the black gene is dominant, there are nine different labrador genotypes, allowing a number of different possibilities.
For example, if you mate two yellow dogs you will get only yellow puppies. Two chocolate dogs can produce yellow puppies, while two black dogs can potentially produce black, chocolate and yellow puppies. Choice of coat colour really comes down to a matter of preference: we all get on best with what we like most.
My enthusiasm for fox-red dogs is simply explained: they are much the best for photography. In contrast, black dogs are a nightmare. They will want to live indoors and sleep as close as possible to you—or even on you. They like to get outside to play, but don't leave them unattended for too long as they may prove they have a naughty side.
Labs have been known to dig and chew, so invest in plenty of sturdy chew toys to keep yours entertained. Labs are an ideal fit for families, as they are happy to bounce around the yard with children.
If properly introduced and trained, Labs can also get along well with other pets in the home including cats , other dogs, and small animals. Beyond retrieving game on hunting trips , the hard-working breed has also served in a variety of fields, including drug and explosive detection, search and rescue, therapy , and assistance to those with disabilities.
They are competitors, doing well in agility, field tests, and at dog shows. And they absolutely love to swim. When you welcome a Lab to your home, be prepared for lots of shedding. Grooming isn't substantial, but brushing your dog daily will help reduce the tumbleweeds of fur scattered about your house from their thick double coat.
They should be bathed every other month to keep them smelling fresh. Brushing their teeth a couple of times a week, keeping their nails trimmed —likely once or twice a month—and checking their ears for redness or odor should also be on your Lab care checklist. Labs demand plenty of play and exercise as well. A daily minute walk or a lively game of fetch will help your pup burn off some of his energy.
Lack of activity could lead to undesirable behavior, but don't overdo it—this "workaholic" breed is apt to exhaust itself. Don't let Lab puppies run and play on hard surfaces for their first two years so they don't damage their joints.
Of course their reputation for good behavior precedes them, but that doesn't mean you can skip training sessions with your Lab. Training is important to ensure they don't grow to become too rowdy. Labs enjoy training and do well in obedience competitions.
Introduce Labrador puppies to other humans and animals early to help socialize them properly. This, coupled with ample positive reinforcement , will allow your pup to grow into the friendly Lab many know and love. The star of the show, Marley, is actually several different Labs who played the role to reflect the various age stages of Marley during the film. Labs are a pretty hearty and healthy breed , living 10—12 years. But, as with all breeds, there are some common conditions to be aware of.
Elbow and hip dysplasia , heart disorders such as tricuspid valve dysplasia TVD , epilepsy , and hereditary myopathy or muscle weakness can all affect Labs.
They can also face eye conditions, including progressive retinal atrophy and cataracts.
