Why window sills rot

The Dutchman patch is cut on a table and miter saw to ensure square corners. We then take measurements and notes to make our solid Dutchman patch on the table saw. The router rode along the sill, sloped 12 to 15 degrees, so we try to match the angle on our patch. We duplicate this slope with the intent of getting all the sides of the new patch to touch all the sides of the hole in the sill. Cut the patch into shape with intersecting rip cuts to create the stepped key effect.

We use West System epoxy, a versatile two-part, marine-grade epoxy that bonds and coats fiberglass, wood, metal, fabrics and other composite materials to provide superior strength and moisture resistance. The epoxy was designed for boatbuilding and repair and works great on windowsills, columns and other areas where gluing, filling and shaping are needed.

We use the epoxy in two ways, as glue and as filler. First we brush on the epoxy to all wood surfaces and then tap in the piece. It swells a bit, and a gentle hammer-tap against a wood block is needed to get the Dutchman in place. Once in position, clamp it or use a few well-placed finish nails hold it until the epoxy dries—usually 8 to 24 hours.

Once the patch is installed, we mix up a batch of epoxy with structural filler to fill and overlap the seams of the patch and any nail holes created during the repair. We wait 24 hours before sanding the patch and applying a quality oil primer to the entire windowsill. The painter will follow us with additional primer and two-coats of paint.

The Oak XTRA is an adjustable premier series spiral staircase that features solid Oak wooden stair treads and landing to complement and add style to any interior living space. Window sills take quite a beating. Constant exposure to the sun, rain and ice can take a toll, especially when water finds its way beneath the layer of paint and caulk.

Ongoing exposure to moisture can cause the sill to rot, a process that only gets worse over time. If left unchecked, the rot will penetrate deeper into the sill, requiring more and more extensive repair, often spreading to adjacent jams and trim-work. We couldn't be happier with the service and product we received. Terry Clark 27 Oct The window installation team were friendly, courteous, open to consultation and shared ideas from their experience. The finished product looks great with no maintenance and a life time warranty. It is also helpful that Weaver offers other exterior services. Weaver removed our old faded siding and replaced it with new vinyl siding. They also replaced damaged and worn eavestroughs, soffit, and fascia.

Andrew and Rob were terrific! The work was carefully completed with much attention to detail. When the old siding came off and problems with the sheathing beneath became evident, they presented us with options that would ensure the job was completed in the best possible way.

Our house now looks fresh and more contemporary. Working with Weaver on this project has been a great experience. Since completing the project, they have been very quick to follow up with some minor adjustments. They truly stand by their work. We had eaves replaced by Weaver and we are very happy with the service and job.

Work was completed in one day even though the day they came to do the job was a little chilly, it didn't seem to phase them. After completion of work they even cleaned up all the ice from old eaves and piled in a corner of our yard. We are very impressed. Sylvie Hosick 08 Mar We are very pleased with the work and professionalism Weaver Exterior Remodeling provided us with our new windows and siding.

Our initial request was to replace our windows, patio door and front entry door, however, we called them again for an additional quote to also replace our siding. We were given excellent service right from Brianne in sales, to the installation team and customer service. One of the owners, Garth, even came to the house to discuss an issue that I had raised. He took the time to explain it to me and offered me an alternate option. John was exceptional with our windows.

His attention to detail was outstanding and we still can't believe he managed to replace all of our windows by himself, even with the heavy patio door. John must wear an invisible superhero cape! The siding team were also very efficient. Hank, Elliott and Matt worked very well as a team and were thorough in the installation. They also quickly dealt with an area of rot on the house, which had to be repaired.

On closer inspection…Houston, we have a problem Tools You Need To Fix A Rotted Windowsill Fortunately, the tools and techniques needed to fix a rotted windowsill are pretty fundamental.

Measure the length of the apron… The sill… And the width of the apron and any other trim to be replaced. Use a utility knife to score any caulk and paint seams.

Tap your pry bar gently behind the apron. Careful of the siding. This is what happens when water works its magic. Pry out the sill, and remove any stray nails. Get rid of any rotted wood behind the apron and sill. A couple of degree days and a heat gun got the innards dried out. A leftover piece of siding was a perfect replacement. You may have to rip your trim to fit. Using PVC trim means you may never again have to fix a rotted windowsill. Use your old sill to find the angle… Run it through, and instant sill!

Paint everything on every surface. Keep that agua OUT. Work from the inside out. Replace sheathing and siding and caulk it. Next, attach the sill.

Nail into framing members. Attach the apron with 8D galvanized nails. Get a two-part epoxy wood filler and mix up a batch… Then push it in, and shape it to match the trim.
